The Irony of Names: Divine Authority Corrupted

The Watchers in 1 Enoch have names, and the names are the joke.
Shemihazah is the leader of other leaders. The Greek text calls the group by the words used for rulers and authorities - the same vocabulary the New Testament later uses for the powers. These are beings holding titles of legitimate office.
And the individual names carry the divine element. One is Batarel, built on the word for rain of God. The sources read this as irony, and note it reveals the secondhand nature of at least some of the names - assigned after the fact, to fit what the being had done.

Authority is not evil. What these names record is authority that kept its title and lost its loyalty.
