Jesus tells his opponents that on them will come all the righteous blood shed on earth - from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.
The two names are a bracket. Abel was killed in the first book of the Hebrew Bible, and Zechariah in the last, which in the Hebrew ordering is Chronicles. Jesus is not listing two victims. He is naming the whole record, beginning to end.
And he starts with Abel, whose blood cried out from the ground. The complaint of the murdered is not lost. It is held, and it is answered.

Nobody in Scripture dies unwitnessed. That is a warning and a comfort in the same sentence.
