Jesus' Deity and the Divine Council

Jesus says I and the Father are one, and they pick up stones. Then he quotes Psalm 82:6 - I said, you are gods.
The common reading has Jesus defusing the moment: we are all called gods in a manner of speaking, so calm down. Heiser rejects that flatly. The idea that Jesus and his audience thought the elohim of Psalm 82:6 were just people is one he does not accept at all.
The error underneath it is lexical. Readers fail to define elohim like an Israelite would, assuming the word carries a unique set of attributes rather than describing a realm of existence.
Read as a divine council claim, the argument is not a climb-down. It is an escalation.
