Knowing Good and Evil: Innocence Lost

The scripture in Genesis 3:5 records the serpent's deceptive promise to Eve that if she and Adam ate from the forbidden tree, their "eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." Later, after their disobedience, Genesis 3:22 states God’s acknowledgment that "the man has become as one of us, to know good and evil." These passages together demonstrate a profound shift in humanity's state, indicating the catastrophic loss of an original innocence.
Before this pivotal event, Adam and Eve existed in a state of untainted innocence, having never personally engaged in or even witnessed any act of willful disobedience. Their acquisition of the "knowledge of good and evil" was not merely an intellectual understanding, nor was it a simple capacity for moral discernment that was previously absent. Instead, this knowledge was profoundly experiential, a direct consequence of their own transgression, meaning they came to understand evil through the painful reality of having committed it themselves.
This understanding of "knowing good and evil" as an experiential rather than solely intellectual acquisition helps us grasp the depth of what was lost in the Garden. It shows us that divine creation, though initially "good" in every aspect, included the gift of free choice. This freedom, tragically exercised in disobedience, led to humanity's firsthand acquaintance with evil and fundamentally altered our condition and our relationship with the Creator. For us today, it serves as a foundational insight into the human experience and the ongoing need for redemption from the consequences of that fateful choice.
