Gog and Magog: Supernatural End-Time Foes

Revelation 20 is drawing directly on Ezekiel 38 and 39. The names are the same, the pattern is the same, and John expects his readers to know the source.
What Ezekiel describes is no ordinary invasion. Gog is presented as a figure empowered by supernatural evil, coming from the uttermost parts of the north - a direction loaded with theological freight rather than a bearing on a map. Many scholars read Gog as a supernatural terror, and the sources judge that trajectory the more coherent one.
One qualification. The sources also treat the Gog conflict as overlapping the present era rather than sitting wholly in the future. Filing it under end times alone, as a single event still to come, is tidier than the material allows.
