Rahab, Giants & the Messiah's Ancestry

The genealogical record of Jesus in Matthew 1:5 includes Rahab, stating, "All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet... they shall call his name Immanuel." This inclusion signifies that God fulfills His divine purposes through unexpected individuals and circumstances. Rahab, a Canaanite woman, is presented in this sacred lineage, demonstrating that God's plan of salvation is not limited by human conventions or ethnic boundaries.
Rahab's story, found in Joshua 2:1, is notably intertwined with elements of spiritual warfare and the defeat of powerful, corrupted forces. Her profession and her actions enabling Israel's conquest are understood in a deeper context, connecting to ancient traditions surrounding the Enochic 'Watchers.' During the Second Temple period, some Jewish interpretations linked Rahab to these 'giants' through her son Boaz, of Ruth 2:1, who is described as a 'gibbor.' While 'gibbor' can simply mean a mighty man, its use in this context, especially in Second Temple translations and thought, often evoked the idea of giants. This connection suggests that Rahab and her descendants were seen as part of the lineage actively opposing the Nephilim, who were attributed as the offspring of the 'Watchers.'
