Eden's Trees: Wisdom and Life

Two trees stand in the middle of the garden, and they are not landscaping.
They are symbolic realities - theological markers establishing Eden as sacred space - and they work as a pair: their fruits procure life and death respectively. The tree of life is not itself divine. It is an image of proximity to the source of divine life.
The other tree offers wisdom independent of God. That is the distinction the story turns on. Not knowledge against ignorance, but wisdom received against wisdom seized.
