The Serpent of Eden: A Divine Rebel, Not an Animal

The serpent in Eden is not a talking animal, and Genesis is not trying to teach you ancient zoology.
The Hebrew word nachash carries more than one sense. It can mean serpent. It can mean one who performs divination. And it carries the idea of shining. The figure in the garden is a member of the divine council who rebels by undermining God's image-bearers inside their own sacred space.
Two precisions worth keeping. The sources rule out a plain animal without ruling out serpentine form - saying the being is more than a snake is not the same as saying no snake was involved. And the divine-rebel reading of Ezekiel 28 is a minority position, which Heiser says openly.
