John says that to all who received him, he gave the right to become children of God. That phrase is not sentimental language.
Children of God is a divine council title. The sons of God in the Old Testament are the beings who were given the nations - and who ruled them corruptly. When John uses the phrase of believers, he is describing a replacement.
The library puts it plainly: we are already, but not yet, Yahweh's new council on earth. We are the children of God who rule the nations, while those nations are currently held by fallen sons of God who oppress their populations.

Your status in the cosmos changed. That is a stranger sentence than it sounds, and it is what the title means.
