Orderly Creation vs. Disorderly Humanity

In the ancient world, creating something meant giving it a job.
The things created in the related realms of cosmos and culture are functions, not objects. To create was to assign a role, set a boundary, bring order out of disorder. That is what Genesis 1 is doing when it separates, names, and appoints.
Which is why Genesis 1 does not answer the question we usually bring to it. It does not tell us how the material got there. It is just there, and then God starts to work with it. The Hebrew verb bara does not by itself mean to create out of nothing.
