Jacob wrestles all night with what the text calls a man. By morning he has a dislocated hip and a new name, and he calls the place Peniel - because he has seen God face to face.
Hosea, looking back on it, uses the word elohim. This was a physical struggle, and one that left Jacob injured. Not a vision. Not a dream.
The New Testament keeps the pattern. After the temptation, angels came and ministered to Jesus - and the sources note drily that this surely means more than floating around in front of his face.
