Expulsion from the Church: Handing Over to Satan

Paul tells the Corinthians to hand a man over to Satan. It sounds monstrous until you see what he thinks the church is.
Galatians calls believers the household of faith. The discipline passages assume exactly that - these are family members, not strangers, and the lapses in view are transgressions of the moral and doctrinal boundaries set by Yahweh. You cannot be expelled from a house you never lived in.
Heiser places this under the heading of allegiance: baptism and the Lord's Table were rites of allegiance. Expulsion is the reversal of an oath, not a mood.
And the aim is stated: that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord. The removal is restorative.
