Jesus' Superiority to Angels and Its Meaning for Us

Hebrews opens by arguing that the Son is superior to the angels, and the argument turns on the Name.
That matters for timing. Jesus did not become superior to the angels only after the cross - the superiority belongs to the Name he already possessed. Hebrews is not describing a promotion.
When the writer quotes today I have begotten you, he is not talking about origin either. It is a statement about inheriting the throne of God. Inheritance language in Hebrews is about co-rulership, not succession.
And the pay-off lands in chapter 2 rather than chapter 1: God helped human beings through the atonement of Christ. He did not do that for angels.
