Peter & Jude's Worldview & Genesis 6

The New Testament writers Peter and Jude interpreted Genesis 6:1-4 as depicting angels, referred to as the "sons of God," who sinned by illicitly cohabiting with human women. Their sin led to their imprisonment until a future judgment. This understanding is foundational to how these New Testament epistles speak about divine beings overstepping their boundaries and facing severe divine justice.
This interpretation from Peter and Jude was not formed in a vacuum but was part of the common understanding within their Jewish community during the time leading up to and during the Second Temple period. This period's intellectual and religious landscape included ideas that connected Genesis 6:1-4 with other ancient narratives, where divine beings intersected with humanity to produce unusual offspring, such as giants. The allusions in 2 Peter 2:4-5 to a place of confinement called 'Tartarus' and in Jude 6 to "eternal bonds under deep gloom" for these fallen angels resonate with concepts found in other Jewish writings of that era, such as 1 Enoch, providing a broader context for their references. Jude 6-7 states, "The angels who did not stay within their own position of authority... just as Sodom and Gomorrah... serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire."
For us as modern believers, recognizing that the New Testament authors' understanding of Genesis 6 was shaped by the broader Jewish intellectual and literary environment of their time is crucial. This perspective helps us to accurately interpret Genesis 6:1-4, moving beyond explanations developed much later in theological history. Embracing this approach allows for a richer, more contextually informed reading of Scripture, enabling us to better grasp the continuous narrative of God's interaction with His creation and the consistent theme of justice for rebellion throughout the biblical record.
