Baptism as a Loyalty Oath in Cosmic Warfare

Peter says baptism saves you - and then immediately explains what he means. Not the removal of dirt from the body, but an appeal to God for a good conscience.
The Greek word behind appeal is eperotema, and it carried a specific sense in that world: it is the Roman military loyalty oath, the sacramentum. A soldier swore it publicly, and it bound him to his commander.
That is what baptism does in the New Testament. It is not a private feeling made damp. It is a declared allegiance, sworn in a contested world where other powers hold territory and expect loyalty of their own.
