Ancient Roots of Antichrist Theology

The antichrist figure did not begin with Christian speculation. The component of that teaching which casts him as an imperial tyrant is pre-Christian and of Jewish origin.
Second Temple literature already had a figure like this. Belial, or Beliar, functions as a parallel to both Satan and the antichrist - a named opponent, an embodiment of lawlessness, expected to be revealed and then destroyed.
So when Paul writes about the man of lawlessness, he is not inventing a category for his readers. He is using one they had.
