Angels and the Food of Wisdom

In 1 Enoch 32, on his cosmic journey Enoch encounters the tree of wisdom and asks the angel Raphael about it. Raphael's answer is striking: "This is the tree of wisdom, of which thy father and thy aged mother, who were before thee, have eaten, and they learnt wisdom and their eyes were opened, and they knew that they were naked and they were driven out of the garden." The text is explicit - this is Adam and Eve's own tree, still standing, now shown to Enoch on his travels.
This detail connects to a broader Jewish tradition from the Second Temple period about "angels' food." Those traditions build on Psalm 78:23-25, which calls the wilderness manna "the bread of angels," and Exodus 16:31, which notes that manna tasted like honey - a detail later writings (like Joseph and Aseneth) link to honeycomb as food eaten by the chief of angels. 1 Enoch 32 doesn't describe angels eating this fruit themselves; rather, it preserves the memory that Eden's tree of wisdom was a real, locatable place in the cosmic geography Enoch tours, with Adam and Eve's transgression still remembered there.
This ancient interpretive tradition invites us to look deeper at the rich cosmology behind biblical texts. It encourages us to move beyond surface readings and appreciate how Second Temple Jewish writers pictured Eden as a real place within a larger cosmic map, still bearing the memory of humanity's first rebellion. This expanded perspective can deepen our appreciation for how seriously ancient readers took the reality of Eden and the fall.
