Yahweh's Name In The Angel

God tells Israel he is sending an angel ahead of them, and then says something that should stop you short: do not rebel against him, for he will not pardon your transgression, because my name is in him.
Two things there are strange. Pardoning transgression is not an angel's prerogative. And the Name is not a label - in Israel's theology the Name actually refers to Yahweh himself.
So this figure carries God's own identity. The sources put it plainly: you have a second Yahweh figure, because Yahweh is actually in this angel.
That is the pattern behind every appearance where the angel of the Lord speaks as God, is addressed as God, and is worshipped without correction.

The Old Testament has a category the later church struggled to name. It is not a crack in monotheism. It is the shape of it.
