Bible Connections 27: Holy Ground

Holiness signifies a state of belonging specifically and intimately to God's presence. In the Bible, God declares, "You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy" (Leviticus 19:2). This foundational statement reveals that the very nature of God Himself is the standard and the source of holiness, and His people are called to reflect that nature.
The scripture references illustrate this truth: ordinary ground became "holy ground" when God was present there, as seen when He instructed Moses, "Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground" (Exodus 3:5). Similarly, God's people are called "holy" not because of their own inherent purity or perfect performance, but because they belong to the holy Lord. This call to holiness extends into all areas of life and conduct, as articulated in 1 Peter 1:15-16: "As he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct." This means holiness is not about religious rituals alone, but about a life uniquely set apart because God is near to you.
Therefore, understanding biblical holiness means recognizing that it is not a withdrawal from the world or an unattainable perfection. Instead, it is your daily life, your decisions, and your actions, all ordered and shaped by an awareness of God's close presence and His holy character. Living a holy life is about acknowledging that you are perpetually in the presence of the Holy One, and allowing that reality to transform your conduct and your way of being in the world.
