Bible Connections 26: Prayer and Participation

God invites his people to participate in his work through prayer. This means that through prayer, we are actively involved in what God is doing in the world. It is not merely a passive act or a way to inform God of things He does not already know. Instead, it is an active engagement with His divine will and mission for the world.
The call to prayer as participation is evident in various biblical accounts. We see the heavenly council, where the Lord is enthroned among the host of heaven, deliberating on events to unfold on earth, as depicted in 1 Kings 22:19-22: "I saw the LORD sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing beside him... Who will entice Ahab...?" Jesus Himself teaches His disciples to pray that God’s will be done "on earth as it is in heaven," as found in Matthew 6:10, directly linking earthly prayer to heavenly action. Further, 1 Timothy 2:1-4 urges prayer "for all people" because "God our Savior... desires all people to be saved...," highlighting prayer as a means of aligning with God's redemptive desires for humanity. Prayer is therefore presented as a vital component in the execution of God's wise rule.
Understanding prayer as participation means recognizing its profound importance in your spiritual life. Your prayers are not simply requests, but rather an active and meaningful involvement in God’s ongoing work in the world. This perspective transforms prayer from a mere routine into a powerful act of partnership with the Divine. It underscores that prayer is not about manipulating God or seeking personal performance, but about humbly participating in His sovereign plan and mission for all creation.
