Bible Connections 24: Suffering and Trust

Suffering in your life is not an indication that God has lost His supreme authority or that He is no longer in control of the universe. Even when you experience hardship, the ultimate power and direction of all events remain firmly in His hands.
The Bible reveals that even in moments of profound suffering, God’s sovereignty is never diminished. The book of Job pulls back the curtain on a heavenly court scene where, as Job 1:6-12 describes, "The sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them... All that he has is in your hand..." This passage clearly illustrates that while an accuser may be active, his actions are still permitted within the boundaries of God's sovereign will, not outside of it. Furthermore, Romans 8:28 assures us, "For those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose," indicating a divine purpose at work even in challenging circumstances. And 1 Peter 4:12-13 advises, "Do not be surprised at the fiery trial... rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings," encouraging believers to expect and find meaning in trials rather than be bewildered by them. These scriptures together assert that unseen spiritual conflict does not equate to God's absence or His loss of control; rather, He is actively working through all things, even suffering.
Therefore, when you face difficult times, you are called to trust in God's overarching sovereignty. This trust does not require you to pretend that suffering is easy or simple; instead, it means acknowledging that God is working "all things together for good" according to His divine purpose for those who love Him. Your faith can be anchored in the truth that God remains on His throne even when life feels chaotic, allowing you to find a profound sense of peace and, as Peter encourages, even rejoice in your participation in Christ’s sufferings, knowing they are part of a greater, good plan.
