The principle that covenant privilege must become believing loyalty means that merely being associated with God's chosen people or promises is not enough; one must personally embrace these truths with active faith and obedience. This highlights a crucial distinction between being part of a chosen lineage or group and genuinely experiencing salvation.
This point is rooted in several scriptural examples. Deuteronomy 7:6-8 explains that Israel was chosen by God's love and his sacred oath, not because of any inherent greatness or merit on their part. Their election was a gift, a privilege, originating entirely from God's gracious will. Similarly, Acts 2:38-39 shows that even those who heard God's promises and were part of the covenant community were still called to "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins." This demonstrates that a personal act of repentance and faith was, and is, necessary for receiving forgiveness and the Holy Spirit. Furthermore, Galatians 3:26-29 clarifies that belonging to God’s family, being "Abraham's offspring" and "heirs according to promise," comes "through faith" in Christ Jesus, not through birthright or proximity to a covenant.
Therefore, while God's election is an act of grace that establishes a vocation or calling for a people, personal salvation is received through a responsive process involving repentance, faith, and a genuine belonging to Christ. This means that you are not saved simply by your heritage or by being part of a certain group, but by actively turning to God, believing in Jesus Christ, and being united with him. Your privileged position, whatever it may be, calls for a responsive loyalty of faith and action.
