Genesis 11 is usually filed under stories about languages. It is the hinge of the Old Testament.
At Babel God disinherited the nations. Deuteronomy 32 tells you what that meant: the peoples were divided according to the number of the sons of God, handed over to lesser divine beings, while Yahweh kept Israel as his own portion.
That single event produces the world the rest of the Bible operates in - a geo-spiritual landscape where nations belong to powers, and where the Jew and Gentile distinction has a reason behind it rather than being mere ethnicity.

When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance... the LORD's portion is his people, Jacob his allotted heritage.

He made from one man every nation of mankind... having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God.
