After the golden calf, Moses stands in the gate of the camp and asks a single question: who is on the Lord's side?
It is not a mood check. It is a public, visible choice made in front of everyone, in the middle of a worship crisis. The tribe of Levi walks across and declares itself. The camp divides by allegiance.
Baptism works the same way. Peter calls it an appeal to God for a good conscience - and the Greek word behind it was used for the Roman military loyalty oath. You are not describing a private feeling. You are crossing the floor where people can see you do it.
