Bible Connections 3: Image Is Vocation

The essence of being created in God's image extends beyond a mere characteristic; it is a profound calling. Scripture reveals that being made in God's image, as stated in Genesis 1:26-28, which declares, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion...", imparts to humanity a specific purpose and responsibility. This means that our very design is intertwined with a divine assignment given directly by our Creator.
This understanding is rooted in the early chapters of the Bible, where humanity is granted a royal-priestly vocation. From the beginning, we are tasked with representing God's rule and care on earth. Psalm 8:4-6 further elaborates on this, asking, "What is man that you are mindful of him... You have given him dominion over the works of your hands...", thereby celebrating humanity as crowned with glory and given authority over creation. This original purpose, though impacted by sin, is renewed and restored in Christ, as Colossians 3:10 affirms, urging us to "Put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator." The new self is being renewed in knowledge in accordance with the very image of its Creator.
Therefore, recognizing that image-bearing is a vocation shapes how you live out your faith daily. It confers inherent dignity upon you, reminding you that your existence is purposeful, not accidental. It also assigns you a task: to faithfully represent God's character and rule in the world. As believers in Christ, you are called to embody this renewed image, living in a way that reflects the Creator's wisdom and authority in every area of your life. This understanding should inspire you to live with intention, stewardship, and a deep sense of your God-given identity and purpose.
