How We Got Our Bible: Why a Verse Is Missing From Your Bible

You are reading along, you check another translation, and a verse is simply not there. Sometimes there is a footnote. Sometimes a gap in the numbering. It is unsettling the first time.
Here is what is actually happening. Modern translations normally follow an eclectic critical text that often gives considerable weight to early Alexandrian witnesses. A disputed verse may be omitted when editors judge that it was absent from the earliest recoverable text. The alternative reading is normally reported in a footnote.
Nothing has been removed from the Bible. A committee has decided that the earliest manuscripts we possess do not contain that line, and has told you so.
That last part is the bit worth appreciating. The footnote is not an admission of weakness. It is the translators showing their working, in public, where any reader can check it. A tradition trying to hide something would not print a note drawing your attention to the exact place.
So when you meet a missing verse, you are not looking at a gap in God's word. You are looking at the honest edge of the evidence, marked clearly.
