How We Got Our Bible: What a Manuscript Family Is

If you have ever compared two Bibles and wondered why they part company, this is the concept you are missing.
Scholars take the mass of Greek New Testament manuscripts and group them into families. The sorting is done by textual readings - looking for where manuscripts agree in common with each other, and where they disagree in common. Manuscripts that keep agreeing in the same places probably share an ancestry.
There are four families, and two of them matter most.
Why bother? Because this is essential for understanding English Bible translation differences and controversies. Nearly every argument about a missing verse, a differing footnote or a disputed ending traces back to which family a translation committee followed.
That is worth knowing before the argument starts. Many disagreements between English Bibles are not disagreements about what God said. They are decisions about which manuscripts best preserve what he said - made in public, by people who wrote down their reasoning.
