How We Got Our Bible: The Masoretic Text Is Not Automatically Best

When Hebrew manuscripts disagree, many people reach for a shortcut: go with the Masoretic Text, because that is the real Hebrew Bible.
The shortcut has a history behind it. The Jewish community did adopt that text, over against the Septuagint and the Samaritan Pentateuch. Some would happily stop all the comparison work there - pick one textual tradition, go with it, and stop doing textual criticism and archaeology altogether.
But the assumption underneath it does not hold. There is a myth that this Hebrew text is somehow better than the others - that the manuscripts the Masoretic Text reflects are superior to the rest. That is simply not the case.
Which does not make the Masoretic Text unreliable. It makes it one witness among several good ones. When it differs from the Septuagint or a scroll from Qumran, the difference is a question to be weighed, not a case already closed by which tradition it came from.
This is exactly why footnotes exist, and why some of them matter.
