Remarkable Accuracy, Different Editions

People tend to pick one of two stories. Either the text was preserved perfectly, or it was corrupted beyond recovery. The actual evidence holds both halves together in a single sentence.
"There was a remarkable accuracy in the transmission of the Hebrew text, but there were sometimes dramatically different editions of the Torah content."
Both clauses are true and neither cancels the other. Within a family, scribes copied with a precision that still astonishes textual scholars - the Isaiah scroll from Qumran is a thousand years older than the medieval manuscripts and substantially agrees with them. Across families, the differences can be large.
Careful copying and multiple editions are not contradictory. They describe different questions: how faithfully was this copy made, and which edition was being copied.
