There Is No Single Masoretic Text

People often speak of the Masoretic Text as though it were a single fixed object handed down unchanged. The scrolls are direct about why that is not quite right.
The scrolls, he says, "showed that there's no such thing as the Masoretic Text, you know, traditional text, because even within that text family, there are disagreements."
A text-family is a group of manuscripts that share characteristic readings - close relatives, not identical twins. Within the Masoretic tradition itself the copies vary in small ways.
That sounds unsettling until you realise it is how scholars can work at all. Because the families are distinguishable, and because we have witnesses from many centuries, the history of the text can be reconstructed rather than guessed at. The variation is the evidence.
