From Babel to the Throne: One Rescue Mission

"A great multitude, which no man could count, out of every nation and of all tribes, peoples, and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb" (Revelation 7:9). This is where the story that begins at a fallen tower finally ends — and the distance between those two scenes is the whole gospel.
What looks, taken alone, like a harsh act of judgment at Babel turns out, read across the whole of Scripture, to be the opening move of a plan that ends with every nation fully restored and gathered, not erased but healed and honored, around the throne. The scattering of Genesis 11 gives way to the calling of Abraham in Genesis 12, whose promise was always that "all the families of the earth" would be blessed through him — never Israel alone, but Israel as the means by which every disinherited people would eventually be reclaimed. This gives real shape and weight to Christian mission: proclaiming the gospel to the nations is not merely a religious duty performed in a vacuum, unconnected to anything larger than personal obedience. It is participation in the actual, ongoing undoing of Babel's ancient disinheritance, nation by nation, exactly as the arc of Scripture, from a scattered tower to a gathered throne room, always intended.
The multitude John sees is not a blended, homogenized crowd with its distinct identities dissolved away into sameness. It is "every nation, tribe, people and language" — every scattered fragment of Babel's judgment, standing whole and honored before the throne, robed in white, palm branches in hand. What was broken apart in scattering is gathered back together in glory, and nothing that was lost at Babel, however far it wandered or however long the wandering lasted, is finally, permanently lost.
