Reading Babel and Deuteronomy 32 Honestly

"Therefore its name was called Babel, because there Yahweh confused the language of all the earth" (Genesis 11:9). It is worth being honest about what Genesis 11 says on its own and what it does not.
Read in isolation, Genesis 11 focuses entirely on confused language and scattered peoples. It does not, in this chapter alone, name the divine beings to whom the nations are afterward allotted. That fuller picture only comes into view when Genesis 10-12 is read alongside Deuteronomy 4:19-20 and 32:8-9, where the Most High "fixed the boundaries of the peoples" and where the sun, moon, and stars — the heavenly host — are described as having been "allotted to all the peoples" while Israel alone is taken to be Yahweh's own inheritance, "out of the iron-smelting furnace," to be "the people of his inheritance" (Deuteronomy 4:20). Reading these texts together is a synthesis, and a more distinctive one than some of the more explicit material elsewhere in Scripture; not every serious reader draws the connection between Babel's judgment and the allotment of verse eight the same way. That honesty matters more than forcing every text to say the same thing in the same words.
What is not in dispute is the pattern itself: judgment followed immediately, deliberately, by rescue. Genesis 11 ends in scattering. Genesis 12 begins, without any narrative gap, with a promise that "all the families of the earth" will be blessed. Whatever the precise mechanics behind the allotment of the nations, and however cautious the reader wants to be about the details, the disinherited peoples of Babel are everywhere in view as the intended beneficiaries of everything that follows — the whole shape of Scripture bending, from that point forward, unmistakably toward their recovery.
