Pentecost Reverses Babel

"Everyone heard them speaking in his own language... Cretans and Arabians: we hear them speaking in our languages the mighty works of God!" (Acts 2:6,11). What was confused in judgment at Babel is unmade, on purpose, in the same currency: language.
At Babel, a single language was shattered into many as a sign of scattering and disinheritance. At Pentecost, many languages are suddenly, miraculously understood as one gospel, proclaimed to representatives of every nation gathered in Jerusalem — Parthians, Medes, Elamites, visitors from Rome, Cretans and Arabians, each hearing "in our own languages the mighty works of God" (Acts 2:11). It is a deliberate reversal, not a coincidence of narrative detail. The Great Commission that follows commissions exactly this reclamation: "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me... go and make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:18-20) — the same "all nations" scattered and reassigned at Babel are now being formally recovered under Christ's total authority. Ephesians 3:10 adds a further layer: God's wisdom is being made known even "to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms" through the church — meaning the very spiritual powers who received jurisdiction over the nations at Babel are now watching their authority overturned, nation by nation, tongue by tongue.
The arc closes in Revelation 21, where "the kings of the earth bring the glory and honor of the nations" into the New Jerusalem, its gates never shut, day or night (Revelation 21:24-26). The seventy nations scattered at Babel are not erased in the end, their distinct identities dissolved into some featureless unity. They are gathered, healed, and honored — every tongue that was once confused at the base of a tower now speaking the very same praise before the throne, in a city built wide enough to hold every nation it once judged.
