Angels Are Called Glories

Revelation 18:1 says, “After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was made bright with his glory.” This verse describes an angel whose very presence radiates the glory of God, illuminating the world. This is not some inherent quality of the angel itself, but rather a reflection of the divine majesty it carries. The angel is so suffused with God's light that its appearance fundamentally transforms the surrounding environment, making the entire earth 'bright with his glory'.
Within Second Temple Jewish literature and even some biblical texts, heavenly beings are sometimes referred to as "glories" or "glorious ones." This terminology is deeply connected to the Old Testament concept of the *kabod*—the weighty, visible manifestation of God's presence and splendor. Cherubim, for instance, are often depicted as guardians or bearers of this divine glory, particularly in contexts related to the Ark of the Covenant and the Temple. Therefore, when an angel is described as having or manifesting "glory," it is understood as a direct extension or embodiment of God's own radiant presence, acting as a messenger or agent of His divine power and splendor, much like the *kabod* itself made God's presence known.
Understanding angels as 'glories' deepens our appreciation for their role as divine messengers and agents. It reminds us that every angelic encounter or mention in Scripture is, in essence, a brush with the manifest presence of God Himself. This perspective should cultivate a profound sense of awe and reverence, shifting our focus from the created being to the Creator whose glory they bear. It also encourages us to look for God’s presence in surprising ways, recognizing that His glory can be reflected through many channels, beckoning us to worship Him alone.
