Afterlife Before Christ's Descent

In Ephesians 4:8, Paul writes, "Therefore it says, 'When he ascended on high, he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.'" This verse points to a profound shift in the spiritual landscape following Christ's triumph. Before Jesus' atoning work and resurrection, the fate of all humanity, righteous and unrighteous, was to descend to Hades, the realm of the dead. This passage implies that Christ, in His victorious ascension, changed the destiny of those who had died in faith.
Historically, the Old Testament understanding of the afterlife was primarily Sheol (Hades in Greek), a shadowy subterranean realm. There was no clear distinction between where the righteous and unrighteous dead went, though we see glimpses of differentiated experiences, such as the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16. The concept of a spiritual 'holding place' for the righteous, often called 'Abraham’s Bosom,' was prevalent in Second Temple Judaism. Christ's death and subsequent descent into Hades before His ascension are pivotal, as Ephesians 4:9 clarifies: "(In saying, 'He ascended,' what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth?"
This truth ought to profoundly shape our understanding of salvation and God's sovereign plan throughout history. It assures us that God's redemptive work spans all time, reaching even into the realm of the dead to free those who, by faith, awaited His coming. We can worship a God who secures the eternal destiny of His people, past, present, and future. This gives us immense hope, knowing that Christ's victory is comprehensive, delivering us from the power of death and the grave.
