New Heavens and New Earth

"He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more. The first things have passed away" (Revelation 21:4). The Bible's final promise is not a return to where the story started. It is the completion of where the story was always heading.
Scripture begins in a garden and ends in a garden-city, and the ending does not simply repeat the beginning — it incorporates and completes it. The tree of life, guarded and made inaccessible after the fall, stands openly accessible again in the renewed creation; the single river that watered Eden finds its far greater counterpart in "the river of the water of life," flowing now directly from the throne of God and of the Lamb. What is promised is not an escape from physical existence into some disembodied "heaven" instead of the world, but the resurrection of the body, following exactly the pattern already set by Christ's own bodily resurrection — real, physical, tangible renewal, not the mere survival of a soul. And the list of what will finally be absent from this renewed world is concrete and total: no more death, mourning, crying, or pain; no more curse; no more strife, deceit, or impurity between nations who once stood divided against one another. Even redeemed human culture and achievement are pictured being carried into the new creation rather than discarded — purified, not erased.
The final image says it best: "He showed me a river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb... the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruits... The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations" (Revelation 22:1-2). Eden is not merely restored. It is healed, filled, and thrown open — forever.
