Acts Theology 99: God'S Witness To All Nations

In his address to the people of Lystra, Paul states, "In past generations he allowed all the nations to walk in their own ways. Yet he did not leave himself without witness, for he did good by giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness."
This statement by Paul alludes to the post-Babel judgment where God 'allowed' nations to go their own way, dividing them. However, even in this period of relative estrangement, God never left Himself without witness. His general providence, evident in creation's goodness—rain, fruitful seasons, and sustenance—served as a continuous, albeit non-verbal, testimony to His existence and loving care for all humanity. This echoes Romans 1:19-20, where Paul explains that God's invisible attributes can be perceived through creation.
While God's specific redemptive plan unfolded through Israel, His common grace extended to all. This teaches us that even in cultures seemingly far from explicit divine revelation, God has always made Himself perceivable through the tangible blessings of life. We are called to recognize and articulate His constant, underlying witness in the world around us, fostering a deeper appreciation for His enduring presence and goodness, even amidst brokenness.
