Acts Theology 97: God'S Sovereign Appointment

Acts 13:48 states, "And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed." The Greek verb 'tasso' here, meaning 'to appoint' or 'assign,' emphasizes God's active role in salvation.
This verse highlights a strong aspect of divine sovereignty in salvation, connecting to what is often called 'remnant theology' in the Old Testament. From the garden forward, God has consistently preserved a 'remnant' of humanity for Himself, even amidst widespread rebellion. Examples include Noah and the calling of Abraham, from whom God would 'extract' a people. This divine action ensures His plan for humanity's redemption will always progress, despite human failings.
This understanding gives us confidence in God's ultimate victory and the certainty of His plan unfolding. While honoring human free will, God also sovereignly intervenes to ensure His purposes are met—whether through personal transformation or calling individuals to specific tasks. It assures us that God will never allow His mission to be utterly thwarted, guaranteeing His family from every nation.
