Acts Theology 96: Son Of The Devil

Paul confronts Elymas callings him, “You son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, full of all deceit and villainy, will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord?” This powerful declaration isn't about physical lineage but spiritual alignment, as seen in passages like 1 John 3:10, where 'children of the devil' are those who do not practice righteousness or love.
This concept extends beyond mere personal failure; it signifies a conscious rebellion against God's plan and character. Just as the serpent in the garden was the original rebel, individuals who persistently oppose God's will and seek to derail His purposes are depicted as sharing that same rebellious 'spirit' or 'seed'. It is a metaphor for profound spiritual opposition.
For us, this means understanding that spiritual battles are often fought against those who actively choose to oppose God's plans. Our faith calls us to stand firm on "the straight paths of the Lord" and to expose deceit with truth, not merely for judgment, but to protect those who might be led astray. It reminds us of the profound choice everyone makes: to align with God's righteousness or to oppose it.
