Acts Theology 89: Peter'S Trance: A Covenant Link

In "Acts 10:10," we read that Peter 'fell into a trance' (Greek: *eckstasis*) while praying. This deep sleep or visionary state is remarkably similar to the 'deep sleep' (Hebrew: *tardemah*, Septuagint: *eckstasis*) that fell upon Abraham in "Genesis 15:12" during the covenant ceremony and upon Adam in "Genesis 2:21." Luke's use of this specific term creates a deliberate theological connection, casting Peter's experience in the same qualitative light as these foundational Old Testament events.
For a Hellenistic Jew, familiar with the Septuagint, this linguistic choice would have immediately linked Peter's vision to moments of profound divine communication and covenant establishment. The original covenant was made with Abraham's descendants (Israel), and Peter's *eckstasis* now signals a new, expansive covenant—one that includes Gentiles. The message is clear: 'What God has made clean, do not call common' ("Acts 10:15"), broadening the scope of God's people.
