Acts Theology 88: Daniel And Divine Information

In Daniel 2:2-20, Daniel and his companions are recognized among Babylon's 'wise men' who are expected to interpret the king's dreams, a task they accomplish with divine help after the others fail. This raises the question of why Daniel's involvement in such practices was acceptable.
The key distinction lies in the 'source' and 'intent' behind seeking information. While Deuteronomy lists certain divination practices as abominable, Daniel's approach is sanctioned because his source for divine insight is the true God of Israel, and his intent is obedience and faithfulness to Him. Unlike pagan divination, which sought information from various unreliable or hostile spiritual entities, Daniel sought wisdom and interpretation directly from God, who sovereignly chose to communicate through him. This highlights that God can work through unusual circumstances, as long as the ultimate source of power and truth is divine and the intentions are pure.
This teaches us that discernment is critical when engaging with external knowledge or practices. It's not always the 'method' that's inherently right or wrong, but the 'source' of illumination and the 'intent' of the heart. For believers, this means orienting ourselves to God as the sole source of truth and wisdom, trusting in His guidance even in complex situations, and ensuring our actions align with His will and glory.
