Acts Theology 84: Lydda: Reclaiming Sinister Ground

Peter, traveling among believers, "came down also to the saints who lived at Lydda. There he found a man named Aeneas... paralysed... and Peter said to him, 'Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you... And immediately he rose.'" This healing in "Acts 9:32-35" becomes a powerful demonstration in a place with a complicated history.
Lydda, or Lod as it's known in the Old Testament, is situated near territories with 'sinister' associations, including Philistine cities tied to the Rephaim, or Nephilim descendants. It was also historically linked to the tribe of Dan, which had a controversial past, failing to drive out giants, migrating north, and becoming associated with idolatry and the 'serpent Bashan' region of Mount Hermon, a place connected to the Watchers.
The inclusion of Lydda in Acts demonstrates that the gospel has power over even the most historically problematic or 'cursed' territories. The healing of Aeneas leads to many residents of Lydda and Sharon turning to the Lord, illustrating that no place, no matter its baggage or notorious cosmic associations, is beyond God's domain or the redemptive power of the Holy Spirit. This reminds us that God's reclamation process is comprehensive, extending His authority even to regions marked by darkness.
