Acts Theology 83: Son Of God And Christ

ACTS SERIES · SON OF GOD AND CHRIST

Ready-To-Post Teaching

After his conversion, Saul immediately proclaimed Jesus in the synagogues, "saying, 'He is the Son of God.'" Two verses later, in "Acts 9:22," he "confounded the Jews who lived in Damascus by proving that Jesus was the Christ." The proximity of these two titles is significant for understanding their meaning in Acts.

While 'Son of God' in the Old Testament could refer to Israel as a nation or the Davidic king, its usage here, immediately followed by the proclamation that Jesus is 'the Christ' (Messiah), expands its meaning beyond a merely kingly lineage. The title 'Christ' in the New Testament is heavily loaded with the full gospel message: Jesus' death, burial, resurrection, ascension, and His role as a divine, glorified being sitting at God's right hand.

Therefore, when Saul declares Jesus to be the 'Son of God,' he is not merely identifying Him as a descendant of David. He is asserting Jesus' divine nature, His resurrected glory, and His ultimate eschatological role as the Messiah who brings forgiveness and gathers the nations. This challenges us to embrace the full, multifaceted identity of Jesus, understanding that His titles speak to His complete authority and redemptive power, not just a limited earthly role.
