Acts Theology 79: Ethiopian Eunuch: Global Gospel

Acts 8:36-37 recounts, “And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.” This moment highlights the unexpected expansion of the Gospel to a man from a far-off land.
The Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of Candace (a title for queen) from regions south of Egypt, was a Jewish proselyte, indicating his prior devotion to God. His journey to Jerusalem to worship, and his diligent study of Isaiah 53 while traveling, demonstrates a seeker's heart. His ability to read the Hebrew text of Isaiah suggests a level of education and commitment, making him an ideal candidate to receive the good news.
This narrative serves as a pivotal moment, marking the last significant conversion of a Jewish proselyte before the Gospel's direct and widespread outreach to Gentiles. It emphasizes that God prepares hearts from diverse backgrounds and distant lands, drawing them to Himself.
