Acts Theology 76: Apostasy And Cosmic Disinheritance

Stephen, in his sermon, declares, "But God turned away and gave them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: ‘Did you bring to me slain beasts and sacrifices, during the forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel? You took up the tent of Moloch and the star of your god Rephan, the images that you made to worship; and I will send you into exile beyond Babylon.’" This powerful accusation connects Israel's historical idolatry to the 'host of heaven,' a theological concept rooted in the 'Deuteronomy 32 worldview.'
This worldview postulates that after the rebellion at Babel, God 'disinherited' the nations and allotted them to divine beings (sons of God), allowing humanity to worship these lesser deities (Deuteronomy 4:19). Yahweh then chose Israel as His own portion. Stephen's quote from Amos, interpreted through the Septuagint, highlights that Israel, Yahweh's chosen people, also gravitated to the worship of these 'host of heaven,' essentially placing themselves in the same 'disinherited' category as the nations. This was a grave theological offense, leading to their punishment and exile.
