Acts Theology 62: Jesus As Lord And Christ

Peter, preaching at Pentecost, quotes "Psalm 110:1" in Acts 2:34-36: "For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”’ Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”
In this passage, David refers to two Lords: the first, 'The Lord,' is God, and the second, 'my Lord,' is the Messiah. Peter uses this psalm to demonstrate that David prophesied a Messiah who would sit at God's right hand, a position of ultimate authority and divine status. Since David himself did not ascend to heaven in this manner, Peter conclusively argues that this prophecy refers to Jesus, resurrected and exalted. This interpretation subtly equates Jesus with Yahweh, as Yahweh is speaking to one who is also 'Lord' to David, suggesting a shared divine essence.
This affirmation that God has made Jesus 'both Lord and Christ' (Messiah) is a cornerstone of Christian teaching. It calls us to recognize Jesus not merely as a historical figure, but as the divine, sovereign ruler over all creation, whose authority is supreme. Embracing Jesus as Lord and Christ requires our full allegiance and transformed lives, reflecting His reign in our hearts and actions.
