Acts Theology 59: Kingdom Fulfilled Beyond Acts

Following the new covenant language, "Ezekiel 37:24" speaks of a future where "My servant David shall be king over them, and they shall all have one shepherd... They shall dwell in the land that I gave to my servant Jacob... and David my servant shall be their prince forever."
While the outpouring of the Spirit in Acts 2 fulfills aspects of the new covenant, this passage from Ezekiel 37 highlights elements that extend beyond what occurred in the early church. The prophecy details the permanent dwelling of God's people in their land under a Davidic king, His sanctuary in their midst, and an everlasting covenant. These specific geographic and political promises were not evidently fulfilled in the immediate events of Acts, which saw the gospel spread beyond Israel's borders.
This discrepancy reinforces the 'already but not yet' theme in biblical prophecy. It encourages believers to recognize that God’s plan unfolds across time, with partial fulfillments building towards a grander, ultimate consummation. While we experience the benefits of the new covenant today, we are also to anticipate a future where God's kingdom will be fully established on Earth, with His people dwelling securely and His presence central, as foretold by the prophets.
