Acts Theology 56: Divine Choice And Human Participation

After Peter presented the criteria, "And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias…. And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias… and he was numbered with the 11 apostles."
This passage illustrates a key theological concept: participatory sovereignty. The disciples actively chose and put forward two candidates, demonstrating their free will and involvement in the process. However, the final selection was attributed to God through the casting of lots, indicating that ultimate authority and decision-making rested with Him. This shows God working through human actions, where human agency and divine will are not mutually exclusive but intertwined.
This encourages us to take initiative and make decisions in our lives, but also to recognize and yield to God's ultimate guidance. While we act, we can trust that God, in His sovereignty, is able to work through our choices—even our methods of discernment—to accomplish His purposes. It's a call to both responsible action and humble reliance on divine leading.
