Acts Theology 52: Disciples' Kingdom Question

When the disciples asked Jesus, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” their question was entirely logical within their Old Testament understanding. They had just heard about the 'promise of the Father' and the baptism with the Holy Spirit, concepts directly linked to prophecies of national restoration, a new covenant, and the indwelling of the Spirit to create a truly believing people.
For a Jew familiar with Jeremiah 31, Ezekiel 11, and Ezekiel 36-37, the coming of the Spirit, the cleansing, and the renewal of hearts were all signs pointing to the establishment of the long-awaited kingdom. They understood these prophecies to mean a literal national restoration, particularly because passages like Ezekiel 37 spoke explicitly of the reunification of the 'two sticks' (Judah and Israel) and a messianic king. Thus, their expectation of immediate kingdom restoration was directly informed by their sacred texts.
This interaction highlights the importance of grounding our understanding of biblical events in their historical and theological context. The disciples were not asking a 'dumb' question; they were expressing biblically informed expectations. For us, this serves as a reminder to always consider the Old Testament background when interpreting New Testament events, allowing it to shape our understanding rather than imposing our own predispositions. It teaches us to appreciate the organic development of God's plan for His kingdom.
