Acts Theology 48: Malta and Pagan Justice

"When the native people saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, 'No doubt this man is a murderer. Though he has escaped from the sea, Justice has not allowed him to live.' He, however, shook off the creature into the fire and suffered no harm. They were waiting for him to swell up or suddenly fall down dead. But when they had waited a long time and saw no misfortune come to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god" (Acts 28:4-6). The islanders on Malta misinterpret a snakebite as divine justice, then reverse their conclusion when the individual survives without harm. This event is a theological corrective to the idea of pagan justice.
The islanders refer to "Justice" (Greek: *dike*) as a personification of a goddess of revenge, who would pursue the guilty and ensure they received their due. Here, the native people assume the individual is a murderer whom *Dike* has not permitted to live. The narrative contrasts this pagan understanding of justice with the true God's protection, demonstrating that pagan deities and their systems of justice have no control over the individual or the circumstances of the mission. The event happens on Malta, an island with Phoenician connections, highlighting that the gospel is reaching even beyond Hellenized (Greek-speaking) Gentiles to "barbarian" Gentiles, who are not traditionally part of Greek culture.
The incident shows that God's plan and protection for those serving His mission override superstitious beliefs about divine retribution. The healing of people on the island further underscores that God is in charge, not *Dike* or fate. This highlights that God's providence is not to be interpreted by superstition; God's servant operates under God's mission, and final judgment rests solely in His hands.
